Marseille is the 2nd most populous French city as well as the oldest city in France. Historically, the economy of Marseille was dominated by its role as a port of the French Empire. Marseille has a large number of theatres, including la Criée, le Gymnase and the Théâtre Toursky. Marseille is the most populous commune in France after Paris and is the centre of the third largest metropolitan area in France.
