Kiel is the capital and most populous city of the northern German state Schleswig-Holstein. Kiel's economy is dominated by the service sector, transportation, and maritime industry. Kiel is also one of the major ports of the German Navy. The oldest building in the city is the 13th century Nikolaikirche (St Nicholas' Church). Kiel's Holstenstrasse (Holsten Street) is one of the longest shopping miles in Germany.
