Heraklion or Iraklion, is the largest city and capital of Crete. The Heraklion International Airport, or Nikos Kazantzakis Airport is located about 5 km east of the city. Crete has a warm Mediterranean climate. Summers in the lowlands are hot and dry with clear skies. Heraklion is close to the ruins of the palace of Knossos, which in Minoan times was the largest centre of population on Crete.
